Peter Ordynsky: A Descendant of Chinggis Khan Canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church

Abstract

This article examines the historical and religious transformation of Dair Kaidagul, a descendant of Chinggis Khan’s Golden Lineage, into Saint Peter Ordynsky of the Russian Orthodox Church. Born a Jochid prince of the Golden Horde and remembered in Russian tradition as a kinsman of Berke Khan, Dair Kaidagul entered the Orthodox world of Rus’ through baptism and was ultimately canonized as Saint Peter. Drawing on Russian historiography, hagiographic tradition, and historical source materials, this study argues that his conversion was not merely an act of personal faith, but part of a broader process through which Mongol imperial legitimacy, Orthodox sanctity, and Russian noble identity became historically intertwined. It demonstrates how a descendant of Chinggis Khan could be transformed into an Orthodox saint and founder of a Russian noble lineage, linking Mongol imperial authority, Russian Orthodoxy, and aristocratic incorporation within a single historical trajectory.
